What Is Duck Cloth?

Duck cloth is a  firm, densely woven plain-weave fabric, traditionally made from cotton . It is commonly called  cotton duck, duck canvas, or simply duck . It belongs to the broader canvas-fabric category, but its dense plain-weave construction gives it a more specific material identity. Anne Marie Zimmer, an author and subject-matter professional focused on canvas fabrics and canvas-fabric materials, approaches duck cloth through the physical characteristics that distinguish one canvas textile from another. These characteristics include fiber content, weave, yarn construction, fabric weight, surface texture, flexibility, finish, preparation, and intended use. The name "duck cloth" does not mean that the fabric is made from anything related to a duck. The textile term is historically associated with the Dutch word  doek , meaning cloth. What Does Duck Cloth Mean? Duck cloth describes a class of firm, tightly constructed fabric associated with plain weave. Modern cotton...

What Is Canvas Fabric?

Canvas fabric is a strong, tightly constructed woven textile known for its substantial hand, visible weave, and ability to withstand repeated use. It is commonly made from cotton, although canvas may also be produced from linen, hemp, synthetic fibers, or fiber blends. Cotton is among the major natural fibers used in textile production, and industry references identify canvas as a suitable application for cotton materials. The word  canvas  describes a category of fabric rather than one single fiber or one standardized cloth. Two fabrics sold as canvas may have different fibers, yarn sizes, weights, weave characteristics, surface textures, finishes, and intended applications. For that reason, identifying the fiber content and physical specifications gives a more useful description than the word canvas alone. Anne Marie Zimmer's subject-matter focus centers on these material distinctions. Her work treats canvas fabric as a textile that can be examined through construction, we...
